What motion picture could possibly be so epic it would require the combined directorial talents of the director of Hellbound: Hellraiser II and the director of Chopping Mall? Would you believe a remake of the 1959 bad movie classic The Giant Gila Monster?

If you’re going to remake a movie, you might as well remake a bad one, and The Giant Gila Monster is most definitely a bad movie. Sure, the ultra low budget 1959 drive-in creature feature that used footage of a real live gila monster as its greatest special effect has marked its place as a classic b-movie; let’s just not kid ourselves about it actually being a good movie.

So can a low budget remake of The Giant Gila Monster actually make a good movie out of hallmark of bad cinema? It certainly can’t tarnish its legacy.

Undead Backbrain broke the news that shooting on a remake of The Giant Gila Monster has begun under the co-direction of Tony Randel and Jim Wynorski.

We’re told that it will be in colour, though done as a period piece set in the 1950s. Co-producer Bill Dever and co-director Jim Wynorski revealed that “the monster will be a combination of practical FX, a live lizard, and CGI!”

Giant reptiles should be nothing new to Wynorski since his output in recent years has included Curse of the Komodo, Komodo vs. Cobra, Dinocroc vs. Supergator, and the upcoming Piranhaconda. Randel has been mostly inactive for the past decade, but back in the 1990’s he followed up Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 with some enjoyably cheesy direct-to-video titles such Ticks, Fist of the North Star, and Amityville 1992: It’s About Time.

Ex-Playboy Playmate Julie McCullough (2012: Ice Age), Terence Knox (Children of the Corn 2: The Final Sacrifice), and Matt Austin (“Power Rangers S.P.D.”) are to star.

I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about this one in the near future. How ironic would it be if the remake of The Gila Monster ends up playing on a double bill with that Return of the Killer Shrews movie that is also in the works?!?
