Brad Fuller Talks Monster Squad Remake

The Monster SquadBrad Fuller has been tweeting up a storm lately, updating fans on the status of a bunch of projects. Next one up? The Platinum Dunes remake of the classic The Monster Squad for Paramount.

According to Fuller on Twitter, “Since a few people asked, ‘Monster Squad’ is being written and [we] hope to have a script in the next few weeks”.

Monster Squad will be directed by Rob Cohen (xXx, Stealth, The Fast and the Furious) from a script being penned by Mark and Brian Gunn.

The charming original film centered on a group of monster lovin’ kids (plus one scary German guy) who are tasked with saving the world from Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, the Creature, and the Mummy. No word yet on how close all parties concerned will be staying to the source material, but we do know that Paramount is interested in turning this into a franchise if it is successful.

You're such an inspiration for the ways that I will never, ever choose to be.

I just threw up in mouth reading this. No matter how many times I tell myself that Platinum Dunes doesn’t exist they still continue to shit on everything I enjoyed as a kid. I had hoped that this project was just going to fade away after the financial bomb of NOES.

This is an inevitable train wreck and I hope DC has learned from the remake of NOES not to allow too much promotion here.

Rob Cohen is a terrible director, much like a B grade version of Dune’s craptastic owner.

It boggles my mind how little originality or risk PD is capable of. It could well be the worst production company full of the least talented people in the history of cinema.

Remakes? I don’t care anymore. It will be made, our morbid curiosity will force us to see it, we’ll complain on here how just how bad it sucks, and move on to the next remake…just like always.

This has all happened before and it will happen again.

Gotta admit, I hate the original and feel it has much room for improvement. Then I saw “Platinum Dunes” and realized it’s a lost cause.

    “Platinum Dunes… Brad Fuller… Rob Cohen…”

    AKA ‘The Wrecking Crew.’

Y’know, I can actually handle remakes of ANOES, F13 and whatever else PD might have thrown our way because 1) I didn’t hate some of those remakes the way a lot of people did and 2) the original characters really don’t qualify as being something I specfically enjoyed in my youth since the original franchises they starred in didn’t actually conclude until the nineties or 2000’s, well into my adult years.Besides, some of those sequels were in and of themselves fairly bad flicks. Freddy’s Revenge comes to mind.

But this is like someone travelling back in time and hijacking a treasured childhood memory. The inevitable quick-edit, bombastically scored, CGI-heavy product that makes it to the silver screen will almost certainly be entirely devoid of the charming qualities which made Fred Dekker’s the Monster Squad such a fave to begin with. Fuck all, man. Must these people taint everything with their soulless ambition?

Next up..PD announces the staging of what will be both a prequel to and remake of the resurrection of Christ. If it’s successful, a reboot of Moses coming down the mount with the Ten Commandments will follow in time for 2012.

Snookie has already been approached to take on the role of the Golden Calf in the latter project. Further news as it happens.
