The Huge List of Horror Movies Coming to Peacock This October

halloween ends peacock

Love or hate David Gordon Green’s contemporary Halloween trilogy, there’s no denying Halloween Ends is one of this season’s most anticipated horror releases. Not to sermonize, but it is pretty remarkable that Halloween Ends is releasing day-and-date on Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming division. Streaming and the theatrical ecosystem can exist together, augmenting the other’s success in ways distributors never thought possible (just look at Halloween Kills’ almost $50 million opening for proof). It’s a win for accessibility. Theaters are cost-prohibitive for a lot of people. They’re also largely inaccessible for some people with disabilities or those who are immunocompromised. Day-and-date is a fortuitous, symbiotic system, and who better than Michael Myers to lead the charge?

Halloween Ends

Which is to say, Halloween Ends hits Peacock on October 14. Michael Myers and Laurie strode return for one final blow. How it pans out is anyone’s guess, but the recent marketing material yield promise, even if David Gordon Green is being a wee bit disingenuous with his assessment of Halloween Kills. There’s no doubt going to be a ton of bloodshed and catharsis. More Michael Myers is never a bad thing. And, as a capstone to Jamie Lee Curtis’ likely end as Laurie Strode (though we’ve heard that one before…), it’s no doubt going to be a bittersweet moment in horror history.

Elsewhere, if Halloween Ends isn’t for you, Peacock has plenty else to guarantee a sufficiently spooky October. There are copious amounts of Monster High for the kiddos and plenty of Leprechaun for the kiddos with grit. There’s even the premiere and subsequent release of Peacock-exclusive miniseries A Friend of the Family, a dramatization of a story previously covered in Netflix’s acclaimed documentary Abducted in Plain Sight.

Child’s Play 2

Alongside Child’s Play 3 through Seed and legacy revivals Curse and Cult, Chucky is going to be on Peacock while airing his second season on Syfy and USA. 2, however, is arguably the best entry. It’s bigger, scarier, and introduces Christine Elise’s Kyle, who would later return to the TV series. It’s the perfect balance of queer-coded horror and winking playfulness. Chucky has never been more, well, Chucky than he is here.

Additionally, the likes of Arachnophobia are landing October 1 for those interested in absolutely ruining their day. Unsung James Wan gem Dead Silence also hits the platform that same day, and that alone is worth the subscription cost.

My Soul to Take

On the same day, Wes Craven’s My Soul to Take, his last feature barring Scream 4, hits Peacock. Widely derided at the time, My Soul to Take is better than it’s often given credit for. Sure, it’s confounding, a tonal mess, and unusually resistant to violence at the most arbitrary of times, but it remains remarkably stylish. In the vein of Craven’s own Shocker, it’s a slasher movie that takes big risks. They don’t all pan out, but it’s a worthwhile entry in the storied canon of Craven’s career.

Elsewhere, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter hits, so that’s something. It’s fun for what it is, truthfully, and does feature Mary Elizabeth Winstead doing what she does best as Mary Todd Lincoln. For the Christmas fiends out there, the best of both worlds are available in Casper’s Haunted Christmas and Krampus, also hitting the streamer on October 1.

A Perfect Getaway

For something unconventional, however, A Perfect Getaway offers the perfect, uh, getaway. A horror-tinged survival thriller, it’s the rare chance to see Milla Jovovich outside the reams of Resident Evil scripting. Two couples tour a tropical paradise together amid reports of another couple murdering tourists. Mistrust abounds, and while the reveal isn’t especially shocking, it does culminate in bone-crunching violence and tension so sharp, it’d make Hitchcock proud.

Elsewhere, Don’t Breathe lands on October 15. Watch it, and skip the sequel. Julianne Hough contends with evil motorists in Curve, and both Insidious and its third entry, Insidious: Chapter 3 land for the supernaturally inclined.

Leatherface

And then there’s Leatherface. While Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo’s Leatherface origin story is not quite what their debut Inside might have promised, it remains one of the stronger entries in the Texas Chain Saw Massacre franchise. In fact, third to both the original and the remake of the same name, it’s one of the best in the franchise by a long shot.

It’s remarkably grim, sometimes to its detriment, and like other modern horror revivals, it’s canonically unclear. While the movie intends to coast along by dint of its cruelty alone—and trust me, Leatherface is at times being cruel as an end in itself—it has much better success with its dour, twangy coming-of-age conceit. A hyper-violent road trip with genuinely strong performances and the French duo’s inimitable eye for hazy summer scenery, it’s more than just a curiosity. It’s a good movie that at times finds itself in the realm of greatness.

Plenty else hits Peacock this month, and the full list is available below. While most heavy hitters are already available, there are some gems being doled out through the remainder of the month. As always, let me know over on Twitter what you’re most excited about!
