Netflix’s DEATH NOTE 2 Will Now Go Back to the Source Material

Netflix is currently working on a follow-up to Godzilla vs Kong director Adam Wingard’s adaptation of Death Note. And today, screenwriter Greg Russo (Mortal Kombat) promises the sequel will go back to the source material.

Russo tells We Got This Covered: “It’s funny because it sounds like a shift in genre but really, it comes down to the same things. It’s about adapting IP. It’s about bringing over an amazing piece of fan property and trying to do it right. And Death Note, I’m a huge fan of the manga, I’m a huge fan of the original source material and I think it’s one of the greatest mangas ever written.”
Agreed. Go on.
He continues: “So for me, I didn’t play any role in Death Note, the first film that Netflix did, but I came in with a kind of a point of view with what I wanted to do in a sequel. And part of that is I wanted to go back to the source material. I wanted to go back to what made the original stuff so great, and so we’re doing something really neat with it. Hopefully, there will be more info on it soon, but it’s going to be… it’s not going to be exactly what you’re expecting. And I mean that in a very enticing way.“
Personally, I’m not sure the world needs another Netflix Death Note flick. I love Wingard but his film was a mess. That said, the ending montage set to Air Supply’s “Power of Love” is one of the great moments of cinema. Yeah, you heard me.
The Netflix adaptation centered on Light Turner / Kira, a high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook that has deadly powers. He can kill anyone he wishes simply by inscribing their name within its pages. Intoxicated with his new power, he begins to eliminate those he deems unworthy of life.
The film sports a 38% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus: Death Note benefits from director Adam Wingard’s distinctive eye and a talented cast, but they aren’t enough to overcome a fatally overcrowded canvas.
Adam Wingard directed Death Note from a screenplay by Charles Parlapanides, Vlas Parlapanides, and Jeremy Slater based on Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. Roy Lee produced with Dan Lin, Masi Oka, Jason Hoffs, and Ted Sarandos. It starred Nat Wolff, Lakeith Stanfield, Margaret Qualley, Shea Whigham, Paul Nakauchi, Jason Liles, and Willem Dafoe. Netflix released the flick back on August 25, 2017.
