Dread Central Kicks Off Video Series Celebrating WOMEN IN HORROR MONTH with Axelle Carolyn

Hello Dread Central Reader!

Yulissa Morales here! I’m the director of U.S. Distribution for Dread. As you may know, February is Women in Horror Month, and for the past few years, we’ve been highlighting and celebrating gals in all aspects and roles in the horror community.

As a relative newcomer to the horror industry at the time (longtime fan), I decided if there wasn’t space for me, then I would make a space for myself and others.

In 2019, we hosted a get together here in Los Angeles at Junior High, a non-profit serving artist marginalized by cis-hetero patriarchy, capitalism, and white supremacy. It was a chance for like-minded people to connect, and we were so lucky to have Junior High’s support.  Serving as a networking opportunity for the attendees, it felt like one of the few events where all female-identifying horror fans could get together and not have their cred questioned every five minutes.

Then in 2020, we had an even larger event at Black Sheep Gallery, in support of Women in Horror Month and the release of the first season of Haus of Horror, another project told from the female horror fan gaze. By the way – check that out if you haven’t already, Haus of is currently streaming free on Tubi!

L-R: Caroline Williams (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Eryn Krueger MeKash (Emmy winning Special FX Artist for American Horror Story), Chelsea Stardust (Director – Satanic Panic, All That We Destroy), Lin Shaye (Actress – Insidious), and Vanessa Decker (Haus of Horror)

And then as we know, the COVID era began and has not ended – which got me thinking… How can we still celebrate and support each other?

So, we reached out to a handful of unique voices in the horror space, some who were even at that first get together. Their task? Shout out, spotlight, and celebrate a woman in horror.  Some of these names you’ll surely already know, and you’d be smart to quickly learn the rest.

Kicking things off, we have Kim and Ket, from the horror-comedy podcast, Kim and Ket Stay Alive…Maybe?, shouting out Axelle Carolyn. A very talented writer/director who recently directed your favorite episode of Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor. We look forward to sharing these videos throughout the month.
