Watching the #1 Charting Documentary on HBO Max is Disturbing and “A difficult experience”

A disturbing new documentary has shot up the charts at Max, and fans of the 2006 documentary Jesus Camp won’t want to miss it. Savior Complex is presently the most-watched documentary on Max, with fans savoring the three-part miniseries that explores Renee Bach, No White Saviors, and Serving His Children. Savior Complex is described as “an investigation into the case of Renee Bach, the world of Christian missionaries, and the phenomenon of white saviors.” Check out the trailer below.
Renee Bach is most known for her Christian nonprofit based in Uganda. Bach, who first visited in 2007, was reportedly driven by the word of God to establish and run Serving His Children, a nonprofit that provided hot meals and medical care to malnourished children. Whistleblower reports highlighted egregious conditions, most notably the regular performance of medical procedures, including blood transfusions, by missionaries with no medical background. An estimated 105 children died under Serving His Children’s watch. Investigations followed, though as of this writing, Bach remains acquitted of any charges.
Savior Complex endeavors to untangle the complex web of Christian missionaries, white saviors abroad, and the genuine harm left in their wake. Check out what fans are saying about the shocking docuseries below. While some fans are enjoying it, others are questioning the ethics of Max platforming someone like Bach and the broader implications of white Christian saviorism in general.
No doubt, Savior Complex will be one of Max’s most talked about docuseries of the year. Incendiary, heartbreaking, and thrilling, it seems to be mandated, though uncomfortable, viewing.
