Well then, here’s some interesting news… it’s no secret that anyone who’s locked into working on the next couple of sequels in The Hunger Games franchise would pretty much be set for life upon completion, but director Gary Ross has other plans.

According to The Playlist before cameras can start rolling on The Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire, this fall, Lionsgate will need to find a director. Gary Ross has officially exited the franchise and will not direct the sequel, formally giving Lionsgate and Summit his notice earlier this week that he will not be coming back.

It seems the burning desire simply isn’t there to spend another couple of years with Katniss in the Capitol. That, and apparently Lionsgate hit him with a lowball salary offer that probably didn’t help the situation. Ross already has a fairly lucrative career as a screenwriter (and rewriter), and money isn’t really the issue for him. Simply put, the filmmaker is looking to change things up for his next effort.

Can’t blame him there.

The sequel to the 2008 bestseller continues the story of Katniss Everdeen and the fictional, futuristic nation of Panem. Due to the events of the previous novel, a rebellion against the ruling Capitol has begun, and Katniss and fellow tribute Peeta are forced to return to the arena in a special edition of The Hunger Games.
