Imagine if you will a Bollywood version of Jaws filled with musical numbers, violent action sequences, and shark attacks featuring what looks like a toy shark bought from a dollar store attacking toy boats that also look like something out of a toy box. Imagine no more – Aatank exists!
This week’s WTF Friday video is the final four minutes from the Hindi shark epic Aatank. Sorry, no song and dance numbers during the climax, but as someone who has seen the film in its entirety, I can assure you there is no shortage of that which Bollywood is most famous for. The plot remains very much in the vein of Jaws with an added subplot about murderous pearl smugglers (just in case you’re wondering who that mustachioed villain in the motorboat is getting skewered). Never released in the US. Not available in any subtitled format. Odds are it will remain that way – with good reason.
Keep in mind as you watch this and all of its state-of-the-art special effects work that Aatank was made in 1996. 1996!
And, yes, that high-pitched trumping wail you keep hearing is the shark’s roar.
