Syfy’s Swamp Volcano Erupts This Weekend; Haunted Forest Double Feature Slated for February

Tired of seeing New York and Los Angeles get destroyed on film? Wish disaster movies could find a different metropolis to reduce to rubble? This weekend’s Swamp Volcano unleashes a lava storm on Miami. And then a month from now you can take a double-dip trip to the black forest of fairy tales in two back-to-back Syfy original premieres: Black Forest and Gretl: Witch Hunter.
Hollywood’s renewed fascination with fractured takes on classic fairy tales sure came out of nowhere, didn’t it? Now it’s everywhere on big and small screens. February 25th will see Syfy getting in on the craze with a pair of unhappily ever afters making their world premieres as part of a Saturday night double feature.
First up at 7/6 CST is Black Forest from director Patrick Dinhut (Dead & Deader) and screenwriter Frank H. Woodward (Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown).
A group of naive tourists take a sightseeing tour into a supposed enchanted forest, where they encounter evil creatures from the world of fantasy. Trapped in the Black Forest, their only hope of survival is fighting their way out.
Ben Cross (Chariots of Fire, Tinsel Korey (The Twilight Saga), and regular Syfy character actor Velizar Binev (Lake Placid 3) star.
The second half of the double bill is Gretl: Witch Hunter starring Shannen Doherty as – what else – a witch. Paul McGillion (“Stargate: Atlantis”) and Emilie Ullerup (“Sanctuary”) co-star in the film written by Brook Durham (Red: Werewolf Hunter) and directed by someone not specified by IMDB.
Something tells me Syfy was really hoping to cash in on the release of Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters with this one since that big screen 3D take on the same fairy tale was originally slotted to open the following weekend.
Expect to see some video clips from Black Forest and Gretl: Witch Hunter online very shortly.
But first, this Saturday night, the heat is on in Miami when the city famous for its glitzy nightlife and beautiful supermodels is threatened by a volcano. Fittingly enough, it’s up to ex-supermodel Rachel Hunter to save city before Lebron James regrets leaving Cleveland.
Synopsis:
Rumbles turn to explosions on an offshore drilling rig. But it’s magma, not oil, that spews up from the depths! Antoinette Vitrini, a prodigy volcanologist, investigates to find that the energy company that owned the rig has tapped a lava tube system, awakening a long- dormant underground volcano whose core lies directly beneath Miami! Antionette and her team have to figure out how to vanquish the volcano before all of Florida is blown into the Atlantic.
The original title for this one was Miami Magma. Somewhere along the way the Syfy brass must have decided Miami Magma sounded too much like the name of an XFL expansion team and changed it to Swamp Volcano. Because, you know, Miami is near the Florida Everglades, in which a few scenes of the movie take place, therefore justifying the Swamp Volcano retitling, I suppose.
Brad Dourif (Halloween II) and Cleavant Derricks (“Sliders”) co-star in this televised disastrophe from director Todor Chapkanov (Monsterwolf) and screenwriter Declan O’Brien (Wrong Turn 4).
