This Day in Horror History: INSIDIOUS Was Released in 2010

Insidious is one of the most successful (and terrifying) franchises of the 21st Century and, today, the first installment of the supernatural horror series turns 10 years old. If it’s been a while, or if you’ve never experienced the film for yourself, revisit the trailer and synopsis below.

Synopsis:
Parents (Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne) take drastic measures when it seems their new home is haunted and their comatose son (Ty Simpkins) is possessed by a malevolent entity.

Insidious is directed by James Wan from a screenplay penned by his Saw co-creator Leigh Whannell; the film stars Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Lin Shaye (whose character, the psychic Elise Rainier is the thread that ties the entire franchise). Insidious spawned the sequel, Insidious: Chapter 2 in 2013. The prequels Insidious: Chapter 3 and Insidious: The Last Key were released in 2015 and 2017 respectively.

Trivia:
Ethan Hawke turned down the role of Josh Lambert, which ultimately went to Patrick Wilson. Hawke would later appear in Sinister (2012). Not only do Insidious and Sinister use a negative adjective as a title; both are also supernatural horror movies produced by Jason Blum, in which both Hawke and Wilson are the head of their respective families, who move into a house that is haunted by a strange entity that specifically targets children. James Wan, who directed both this film and Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013), and The Conjuring (2013) and The Conjuring 2 (2016), had The Conjuring franchise in mind, while directing the first Insidious movie. A number of coherent points can be spotted in both the first and the second Insidious movies. (Source)
