Salacious and Forgotten Reese Witherspoon Thriller Dominates Netflix Movie Charts

One of the most fascinating things to witness as a millennial is the resurgence of pop culture once lost to the sands of time. With TikTok reviving 2000s music to Generation Z discovering shows like Friends and Sex and the City via streaming, it’s always a wild ride watching what’s old become new again. Today proves to be no different. The controversial mid-90s thriller Fear seems to have found new life on Netflix, steadily climbing this week’s charts.

When Nicole met David; handsome, charming, affectionate, he was everything. It seemed perfect, but soon she sees that David has a darker side. And his adoration turns to obsession, their dream into a nightmare, and her love into fear.
James Foley directed Fear based on a script by Christopher Crowe for Universal Pictures in 1996. It featured fresh-faced Reese Witherspoon, Mark Wahlberg, and Alyssa Milano.

The Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon erotic thriller was a sleeper hit upon its release in 1996. And while this title has not aged gracefully, I must admit it’s still one hell of a fun rollercoaster ride (heh).
The film has been criticized for its clumsy portrayal of domestic violence, violence towards LGBT folk, sexual abuse, and a cornucopia of other 90s staples. That may be a fair enough content warning for some, but I always take the opportunity to hit play on this 90s camp classic when I can.
