It’s been a long time since there’s been any movement on Kevin Smith’s first foray into horror, “>Red State and for a while there we began to think maybe the project was DOA.
Such is not the case, as STYD found out when speaking to Smith before the premiere of his latest, Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Apparently the biggest problem getting the film made is that age-old she bitch, money. ”We’re still looking for some cash for it ‘cause it’s not a really commercial film at all,” Smith explained. ”It’s very bleak and very dark, and there’s no one to root for in the movie, so it’s a real film festival type of film, but it’s not the kind of movie you can take into multiplexes and do a bunch of business with unless it becomes a water cooler type of movie where people start talking about it. So we’ve had trouble finding financing for it, but hopefully that’ll come together soon. Script’s all done.”
The plan is to shoot it for about $5 million in the Midwest with a cast of unknowns, which are also factors not conducive to people handing you money. It’s still kind of hard to imagine Smith actually doing a horror movie, despite his intentions, but he is going more for a disturbing horror akin to the original Wicker Man, so I’m sure it’ll be interesting if nothing else.
