Rest in Peace Dave Brockie / Oderus Urungus

Rest in Peace Dave Brockie / Oderus UrungusThe world lost an amazing person today. Some truly shocking and tragic news is coming out of Virginia as GWAR frontman Dave Brockie (Oderus Urungus) has passed on at the all too early age of just 50 years old.

According to MSN, officers were called to Brockie's home Sunday evening (March 23rd) and found the singer dead inside, Richmond police spokeswoman Dionne Waugh said Monday. Detectives don't suspect foul play at this time, and the medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death, Waugh said.

The band, founded in 1984, is best known for its members' high-profile costumes and stage theatrics, but beneath it all they had a strong message and were anything but shy in terms of getting it out there and shouting it from the hilltops. Brockie was also a staple of the Adam Green and Joe Lynch show for FEARnet, "Holliston," in which Brockie as Oderus played Adam's friend and confidante.

Having met Dave a few times, I can honestly say he was one of the coolest and nicest guys we've run across in this crazy and at times ass-backwards business. He will be missed sorely by his friends, family, bandmates, and fans across the world. We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to offer our sincerest of condolences to all.

Thank you, Dave... may you forever rock on, my brother! Horns held high.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Brockie and the cast of Holliston at a HorrorHound convention last year. He greeted everyone out of his signature Oderus Urungus costume, and struck me as an incredibly friendly, laid back guy who was completely cool with every fan who spoke with him.

After a round of signing, he donned the Oderus getup and persona and took to the stage to participate in a live script reading for fans with the entire cast present, and he was absolutely hilarious. From his roaring voice to his visible backstage antics once his part had finished, he kept the audience in stitches throughout.

50 is far too young to lose someone, especially a guy who seemed so full of life. My condolences to his friends and family.

Rest in peace, sir.

Tragic news. Brockie was an insane showman...
There will never be an act like GWAR.

Well that's just fucked up. I can only imagine how Adam Green and the cast of Holliston are taking it, let alone the massive fanbase of the band. May he rest in peace.
