First Look Photos and More Details on The Vampire Diaries Spinoff The Originals

First Look Photos and More Details on The Vampire Diaries Spinoff The OriginalsThis week's issue of Entertainment Weekly is home to some first look photos of "The Originals," The CW's potential spinoff of "The Vampire Diaries," and we have them all right here along with a few more details of the paths the show might take us down.

We already know that in the upcoming April 25th episode of "TVD," which serves as a backdoor pilot for "The Originals," Klaus (Joseph Morgan) returns to New Orleans, which his family helped build, to explore a threat against him by some witches. He finds that his former protégé Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) is ruling as unofficial king and has created what Klaus has always wanted: a community. "Marcel's got people to look the other way while they have these crazy hedonistic parties and do whatever they want," Morgan says. "TVD" and "Originals" exec producer Julie Plec adds, "He's done it through force and some pretty nefarious acts. Somehow Marcel has managed to silence this deep and rich community of witches."

But not for long - Sophie (Daniella Pineda) is leading a witch revolt against Marcel and is, per Plec, "at the center of the mystery Klaus is trying to unravel, which is, 'What do these witches want with me, and what does Marcel have on them?" But the larger arc is a study in character and family dynamics. Plec explains, "'The Originals' will ultimately be the redemption tale of Klaus and, possibly, the unraveling of Elijah (fan favorite Daniel Gillies), who is going to have to maybe get his hands dirty in an effort to keep his brother in check."

As we also already know, Phoebe Tonkin's Hayley is heading to New Orleans as well to hunt for the werewolves Klaus told her about who have the same birthmark she has. Klaus may not be the only character to find redemption in "The Originals," as Plec adds, "Her journey is how to connect her back to other people, how to find her humanity in the midst of some dark things that she's done. This would be as much about Hayley's redemption as anyone else's."

Don't think Plec has turned her back on "The Vampire Diaries," though, as she plans to co-run "TVD" next season if "The Originals" becomes a series and offered a few teases of what's coming: "It's a time when everybody's scattering so it's an opportunity to introduce a lot of new faces." Where the regulars end up depends on who survives this end of this season, who takes the cure, and how the central love triangle twists in the finale. Paul Wesley would love to see Stefan hit the road (again) and says, "Stefan is really interesting when he separates from the pack and is exploring his own demons. I think it's time for him to go off and then come back later to Mystic Falls and see how that impacts the relationships he has with Elena and Damon."

And what the hell is up with Silas? "He's definitely the Bad," concludes Plec. "Where he falls in the line of big, bigger, and baddest, we'll have wait and see."
