ABC to Re-Animate The Returned with Brad Pitt's Plan B

ABC to Re-Animate The ReturnedABC is hoping that maybe the living dead of "The Returned" can give them that spark of life in the ratings they seek. I mean, if you can't count on a zombie show to get eyes on your network, then what can you do?

Variety reports that “The Returned,” from ABC Studios with Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Brad Pitt's Plan B, is a serialized drama that “centers on a Midwestern town where the dead return to change the lives of those they left behind...” hopefully by scaring them to death. In a perfect world, I tell ya!

The series is based on the debut novel by Jason Mott, which is being released next September by Mira Books.

Aaron Zelman, whose credits include “The Killing” and “Damages,” will serve as scribe and exec producer on “The Returned.” ABC recently shelved plans for summer series “Weird Desk,” based on two investigators probing cases with supernatural elements, but maybe this one will stick.

Look for more as it comes.

Why do I have a feeling this is going to reek of Babylon Fields?

How can you base a TV series on a book that won't be released for nearly a year? I've seen TV shows eclipse the books they're based on (Dexter), and I've seen books based on TV shows, but I have never seen a show based on a book that was released before the book.

Touched by a Zombie sounds like what this show should be called. Or maybe Highway to Purgatory.
