Top 6 Zombie Movies that Break Zombie Rules

One of the things I love about zombie movies is that there are some unspoken rules that the audience goes into the movie knowing, which then cuts out your exposition time. One of the things that I hate about zombie movies is that there are some unspoken rules that the audience goes into the movie knowing, and if one of these rules is broken...

...the movie is looked poorly upon.

Confused yet? Good! I would say that the top three of these unspoken rules would be that zombies are not alive, zombies want to either eat people or spread their zombie-ness to other by biting them, and shooting a zombie in the head or otherwise destroying its brain will kill it. The following list is full of movies that make for really fun zombie movies or are typically regarded as zombie movies, but they break at least one of the previously stated rules.

6) 28 Days Later...
Most people's first reaction to this movie was: "Running zombies?! I don't think so!" You'll notice that I didn't state running as an important zombie rule, as quite a few zombie movies in the past decade have featured zombies that have no problem moving with urgency. The only "rule" that this movie really adheres to is the fact that the virus in the film is spread by bodily fluids, whether that be blood or saliva or, well, we didn't see any other scenes that ran the gamut of bodily fluid ingestion. At the time this movie was released, it made perfect sense to tap into the fear we have of blood and the deterioration of society, similarly to how Romero showed the dangers of science and the collapse of social order in Day of the Dead. Also, I think we can all agree that if it wasn't for the success of this movie, there wouldn't have been Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, Land of the Dead or the remake of Dawn of the Dead. Hey, I'm not saying whether or not some of those movies should have been made, just pointing out the help they got from 28 Days Later...

I knew this list would rile you cats up! LOL While there is indeed a difference between zombies in the truest sense of the word and a couple of the flick's creatures on this list, the vast majority of people out there have a tendency to lump things together into one group.

No matter how you slice it though, with the exception of maybe 28 Days Later (and even then we're kind of splitting hairs here), each of the film's mentioned above featured humans who died in one way or another being resurrected one way or another. Whether it be demonic possession or something else. I'm fairly certain that was the gist of the list.

Thanks for backing me up, Uncle Creepy! And yes, that was exactly the point of the list. For example, if we were to focus merely on the fact that zombies are the dead that come back to life, then some vampire movies could be considered zombie movies. Same goes for any/all Frankenstein movies, and I think Frankenstein transcends the "zombie" genre.

Feel free to completely bash the movies I've chosen, or tell me what movies are better, I just hope you understand what the theme of the list was and that maybe "Zombie movies that break the rules" makes a better title than "Movies that kind of sort of have things in them that are kind of like zombies but they aren't so what's the point?"

Never thought of the Demons as zombies in any way. The list needed Let Sleeping Corpses Lie. The zombies there can only be killed by fire.

Are people just not reading what I said in the beginning? That I know that these movies aren't traditional zombie movies because they are breaking "rules"? If we're going by all of these rules that are associated with "zombie" movies, then NONE of these are zombie movies.

They aren't zombie movies at all (dafuq? ಠ_ಠ) and therefore shouldn't be mentioned.
It doesn't matter what you said at the heading, if they aren't zobie flicks, they aren't zombie flicks.

Your list only contains three Zombie films. that would be the first three. Demons are demons , Rec2 are demons , and 28 days later are infected living people NOT DEAD .Nice try though.
