How Much ParaNorman Activity Was there at this Weekend's Box Office?

How Much ParaNorman Activity Was there at this Weekend’s Box Office? It may be an animated movie, but ParaNorman was the first horror-flavored movie offering on the big screen in a couple of weeks. Despite solid reviews, the family flick about a boy saving his town from the undead wasn’t able to scare up much audience from either kids or adults.

The new macabre 3D stop-motion animated movie from the makers of Coraline opened to $14 million, so sayeth Deadline, about on par with the opening weekend of Coraline, yet not terribly impressive considering the inflated 3D ticket prices. With the geezers of action topping the box office in The Expendables 2 and the Damon-less Bourne fourthquel, The Bourne Legacy, coming in second, that left ParaNorman to battle the sparkling ghost of Whitney Houston for third and fourth.

No doubt Disney releasing its own family flick, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, on Wednesday did not help ParaNorman’s box office chances. Even though the film about a leafy boy has only raked in $15 million in its 5 days, it’s not hard to imagine some of that money would have come ParaNorman’s way had they not been in direct competition for the same audience.

Horror for grownups returns to the box office in a big way starting Friday with The Apparition next weekend, The Possession the week after, Resident Evil: Retribution a month from now, House at the End of the Street a week after that, and the likes of Hotel Transylvania, Frankenweenie, Sinister, Paranormal Activity 4, and Silent Hill: Revelations rounding out the Halloween movie season.

Looks like a good time for horror, save for the new RE movie. Looking forward to it.
