Ghostbusters III Directors Step DownIt was announced awhile back that Ivan Reitman wouldn’t be directing Sony’s Ghostbusters reboot/sequel and that the directing duo from The Lego Movie were stepping in to take the reins. That was then. Everything is not awesome.

Reports are hitting the web that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have left production of Ghostbusters III. Jeff Sneider broke the news, adding later, “They could very well return to GHOSTBUSTERS, I’m just told the studio is meeting with other directors now in case they don’t…”

Reitman stepped down in the wake of Harold Ramis’ passing, and he says that both he and Sony are incredibly happy with the Etan Cohen-penned script, which is cut from the same cloth as the original films.

The original Ghostbusters will have a very small role in the sequel, though Bill Murray is not expected to reprise his role as Peter Venkman and join former co-stars Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson, who played Ray Stantz and Winston Zeddemore, respectively.

Production could start as early as this fall, but it’s expected to begin early next year in New York.

Stay tuned.
