Vampire Academy Flunks Out at the Box OfficeHere we go again. Unless it has the words “twilight” or “hunger” in the title, film versions of female-centric genre novels can’t seem to find a large audience, even amongst their own built-in fanbase.

Vampire Academy just became the most recent failed film franchise to get buried in the Young Adult graveyard.

Yep, the latest Young Adult book series hoping to become the next Twilight or The Hunger Games at the box office just got a great big stake through the heart. The Weinstein Company’s critically lambasted Mean Girls-with-fangs bombed in 7th place with an anemic $4.1 million. That’s considerably below the openings of fellow YA genre adaptations Beautiful Creatures, The Host, and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, all three of which were considered flops in their own right.

The producers of Divergent, opening in a few weeks, should be even more nervous about that film’s prospects after seeing the lack of reception Vampire Academy just received.

While such genre offerings as the RoboCop remake, the disaster epic Pompeii, and the previously mentioned Divergent open in the coming weeks, the horror genre itself doesn’t make a full return to wide release cinema until well into April, when Oculus arrives.
