Earlier this year came the sad news that Will Smith would not be reprising the role of Captain Steven Hiller for Roland Emmerich’s upcoming Independence Day sequel, tentatively titled ID Forever Part 1.
Though Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum will both return, Emmerich said that the cost of bringing Smith back on board was simply too high and that the fresh prince really didn’t want to be a part of the film anyway. But perhaps he spoke a bit too soon.
In a recent interview with Digital Bits, Emmerich said that “anything can happen” and he is in fact in talks with Smith about returning. “I sometimes say no, Will Smith will not be in it because he didn’t want to do it at first,” Emmerich explained. “Now we have a meeting planned; we want to talk about it again.”
It’s not Independence Day without Will Smith so here’s hoping the two can work something out!
The release is currently set for July 3, 2015. Mark your calendars!
