Stop the Presses! Fritz Lang's Metropolis is Coming to Blu-ray

Today? Today is a very good day. News has come that one of the single greatest film masterpieces ever is on its way to Blu-ray high definition, and it has us grinning from ear-to-metallic-ear!

Harry over at Ain't it Cool just broke the glorious news that Kino will be releasing Fritz Lang's highly influential landmark film Metropolis onto Blu-raylater this year.

For thousands of people around the globe, Moroder’s Metropolis was their introduction to the films of Fritz Lang, and many have been waiting to see this film re-released -- with improved sound and image quality. This is it!

This “version” of Metropolis comes with music by Freddie Mercury, Pat Benatar, Bonnie Tyler, Moroder, and many other famous 1980s acts, and we’re confident that interest is very high on this title. Metroopolis is Kino Lorber’s all-time best selling film – by a wide margin – and just the theatrical re-issue of this film has already collected $1.2 million in theaters since its restoration. So you can be sure that there are thousands of Metropolis fans out there.

As a back story, this new restoration (and edit) of the film was made by Giorgio Moroder, the three-time Academy Award-winning music producer who specialized in pop-rock soundtracks for motion pictures, and the film was first released in 1984.

Moroder’s version of the film restored a number of previously missing scenes and plot details from the original release (in particular, Moroder's version restores the character of Hel, who was omitted from the original release version of the film), and the “Moroder version” of Metropolis sparked heated debate among film buffs and fans, with outspoken critics and supporters of the film falling into equal camps.

Mororder film's release came at the same time that Queen released their video "Radio Ga Ga", which featured footage of the film, and combined with the film’s release, it brought Metropolis back to the public eye. It also brought attention to the large amount of missing footage cut from the film, due to Moroder opening the film with a disclaimer that addressed how the film was altered and recut shortly after its premiere. Music rights issues regarding the film's usage of popular songs of the 1980s have kept the film from receiving a DVD and Blu-ray release, until now.
