B-Sides - In Honor of This Weekend's Carmageddon

If you’ve ever seen National Lampoon’s Vacation, then you’ve no doubt ended up with Lindsay Buckingham’s “Holiday Road” stuck in your head. Now if only anyone could figure out what was going through his head when he filmed this depressingly surreal music video for such an upbeat song.

“Holiday Road” is a very short song, barely two minutes, and only has like four lyrics (one is even a repeat). If you actually stop and listen to the song, it doesn’t even make sense. The song still makes a hell of a lot more sense, though, than the 1980 music video Buckingham did for it that doesn’t include any allusions to the movie Vacation or anything even as remotely joyous as the song itself. Such a cheery song; yet, here’s this morose music video with Lindsay Buckingham looking like an incarnation of Dr. Who that gave up time traveling in favor of a job in the corporate sector, singing this happy song in a gloomy sweatshop. If you changed the song to something by Pink Floyd, this video could have been a scene from Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

So for everyone in Los Angeles trapped in this weekend’s Carmageddon, from a motion picture about a Southern California car trip gone comically wrong, this week B-Sides is “Holiday Road” by Lindsay Buckingham, the biggest music video downer for a song that’s meant to be a peppy upper.

The media have really gone nuts with this Carmageddon crap... another case of them trying to make dramatic news as opposed to reporting it.

The first time I saw the term I thought they were referencing an old pc game I really enjoyed.

P.S. Catchy song.
