Atlanta’s Buried Alive Film Festival Unearthed This Weekend

Film festivals have for many years been a staple of most serious film fans’ experience. They are a great way to see a host of obscure and hard to find films and to see them gloriously displayed on the big screen. A lot of film festivals though tend to show the same old thing despite their venue and location differences. However, in Atlanta, GA, there is a truly inspired festival called The Buried Alive Film Festival which is scheduled for November 12 & 13 at the historic Plaza Theater.
Bigger and better than ever, this year’s Buried Alive Film Festival is being sponsored by Fangoria magazine and the forthcoming American Horrors TV show and will screen five features – four of them Southeast premieres – and over 30 stunning short films from around the world.
The 2010 event also marks the first US festival appearance of multiple award-winning British filmmaker, Ashley Thorpe, the first Southeastern appearance of members of Michigan’s buzz-worthy Collective Studios, and all the way from Brazil, rising filmmaker Andre Paim.
“We’re proud to be screening HERSCHELL GORDON LEWIS: THE GODFATHER OF GORE, a feature-length documentary made by cult director Frank Henenlotter & Jimmy Maslon,” says Festival Director Blake A. Myers. “The film had its world premiere at the prestigious Fantasia Festival in Montreal back in July, and we were delighted when Something Weird Video, the documentary’s producer, granted us the Southeast Premiere.”
Other features include Marc Leland’s SHE WOLF RISING starring scream queen Tiffany Shepis; James Felix McKenney’s SATAN HATES YOU, a twisted, comedic take on the Christian “cautionary” features of the ‘60s and 70s; and the psychotronic Japanese jaw-dropper, ROBOGEISHA, from director Noboru Iguchi (TOKYO GORE POLICE and THE MACHINE GIRL).
“ROBOGEISHA defies description as it features ninja geishas, ninja goblins, who are hot, mask-wearing girls in bikinis wielding samurai swords and who shoot acidic milk from their breasts,” Myers adds. “Not to mention a giant temple monster, buildings which bleed when smashed and old people with weapon implants in their kneecaps. It’s crazy.”
The fifth feature with be a midnight screening of the classic Herschell Gordon Lewis splatterfest, 2000 MANIACS! (1964), starring Playboy Playmate, Connie Mason.
Included in the nearly three dozen shorts being shown are world theatrical premiere of Terry Gilliam’s THE LEGEND OF HALLOWDEGA, Bobby Miller’s Sundance hit, TUB, featuring an impregnated bathtub; make-up FX maven Greg (“THE WALKING DEAD”) Nicotero’s THE UNITED MONSTER TALENT AGENCY, a “lost” Movietone News featurette concerning creature talent wrangling in the 1940s; Matt Simpson’s award-winning PLAGUE, which deals with zombie transformation; three of Ashley Thorpe’s award-winning shorts; Andre Paim’s SADNESS, a chilling meditation on madness and loss; and Collective Studios’ CLEAN BREAK, a charming 30 minute black comedy of errors and search for meaning starring best-selling skeleton author, J.D. Strickland, who is, well, an actual skeleton.
The Buried Alive Film Festival starts at 6:30 PM on Friday, November 12 and concludes with a midnight screening of TWO THOUSAND MANIACS! on Saturday 13. All shows are $10.00. Festival Passes for the two days are $50.00 (a $50.00 savings).
