UPDATED: A Tour of Tim Burton's Wonderland / Odeon Boycott Avoided
With its March 5th premiere approaching, Tim Burton's 3D vision of Alice in Wonderland is sure to appeal to genre fans. Which is why we're providing a video tour of the props, costumes, and set pieces from the film that Nomad recorded for us during last year's San Diego Comic-Con.
The film, which combines live-action, stop-motion, and CG animation, has an updated synopsis as follows: 19-year-old Alice (Mia Wasikowska) returns to the magical world from her childhood adventure, where she reunites with her old friends and learns of her true destiny: to end the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter)'s reign of terror.
In addition, Alice is finding herself embroiled in a bit of controversy overseas. Per the BBC Odeon cinema group has refused to show Alice in Wonderland at its theatres in Ireland, Italy, and the UK because the film will be out on DVD soon. Odeon objects to Walt Disney's decision to release the film on DVD just 12 weeks after it is first shown in theatres. The usual period between cinema and DVD release is 17 weeks.
The cinema group says it has invested "considerable sums of money" in digital projection equipment to show 3D films, and a shorter window to screen movies undermines its investment.
UPDATE: According to The Guardian the UK's biggest cinema chain reached an agreement with Disney to show Tim Burton's 3D fantasia on its screens, just hours before the film's world premiere in London. "An enduring agreement has been reached encompassing all the different aspects of both companies' commercial relationship," said Odeon in a statement. "As a result of this agreement, Odeon is pleased to confirm that it will be able to continue with its plans for significant investment in new cinemas, in digital technology, in 3D capability and the other exciting developments designed for the increased enjoyment of all its customers." For more details, including Disney's ongoing negotiations with other theatre chains across the globe (beware: the US' AMC is mentioned), be sure to read the full story.
