Any time we hear John Carpenter’s name attached to a project, we get excited. But when he’s linked to something as cool as the story of the Darkchylde comic book series, we sit up and really take notice. Here’s the latest info on the project.

Darkchylde is, of course, the story of Ariel Chylde, a teenage girl who has the power to turn herself into the nightmare creatures of her dreams. She is in a constant battle to protect her small town from the beasties she’s set free. Yep, that sounds like a story the great John Carpenter can really get behind.

What we’ve known thus far about the film is that Darkchylde creator Randy Queen is personally working on the script and Weta Workshop is helping to bring the nightmarish tale of Ariel Chylde to the silver screen. New information has just become available from Sandy King, the lovely wife of John Carpenter and the horror legend’s producing partner.

According to Ms. King in a recent interview with Daily Grindhouse, Weta (famous for their stellar work on little films like The Lord of the Rings, Avatar and The Avengers) is currently developing the creature concepts for Darkchylde, and also toiling away on the project is Illusion Industries (Watchmen, GI Joe: Retaliation). Illusion has been charged with developing the design for Ariel. The visual F/X branch of Peerless is currently working on the manifestations. These are cool parts of the film to be involved with for sure, but Ms. King stressed all the creature effects will be practical with CG enhancements. Sounds like they’ve got all the bases covered here.

As for who will be taking on the role of Ariel Chylde…early rumors have named Chloë Moretz, Elizabeth Olsen and Elle Fanning as possible suitors for the part.

Look for lots more on this extremely intriguing project as it becomes available.

Massive Collection of Original Stephen King Manuscripts Tragically Lost in Flood

The last couple of years have seen a massive resurgence in movies and TV adapting the works of noted author Stephen King. We got “The Mist”, “Mr. Mercedes”, “11.22.63”, “Castle Rock”, The Dark Tower, IT, Gerald’s Game, Cell, and more. The power of his words have clearly resonated across generations and are impacting viewers today just as much as they did readers upon release. For Bangor, ME resident Gerald Winters, King’s work is more than a passion, it was his life’s calling.

According to the Maine Public, Winters moved to the United States from Thailand over a year ago and established his own business, Gerald Winters & Son. A rare book store, it was Winters’ intention to collect and store as much of King’s original work as possible, including first editions, manuscripts, signed copies, artwork, and more. The collection numbered in the thousands, a treasure trove of all things King.

Tragically, some 2,000 pieces of his collection was irreparably damaged when a water main burst in front of his business, flooding his store’s basement with several feet of water, soaking everything. “You can’t replace this stuff,” he told the site. He estimates that only 10% of his store’s inventory was okay after the incident.

Many of us have our own personal collections of something, be it movies, books, comics, toys, instruments, records… Whatever it is that you hold dear, that is what Winters felt towards his collection, which included items he traveled the world to acquire. It’s beyond heartbreaking to hear of his story.

Check Out the Amazing Poster for Panos Cosmatos’ Mandy Starring Nicolas Cage

Truth be told I have not heard one thing about the upcoming Nic Cage period action-thriller Mandy until today.

That’s not to say I’m not totally intrigued by the film, which is directed by Panos Cosmatos who helmed the gorgeous mind-trip Beyond the Black Rainbow a few years back. It has just slipped under my radar.

But all of that changed today with EW‘s reveal of the film’s poster which is about as badass of a poster as I have seen since the fantasy flicks of the 80’s.

You can check out the killer new poster for the film in higher-res to the right and then let us know what you think!

Mandy is directed by Panos Cosmatos (Beyond the Black Rainbow) and stars Nicolas Cage, Andrea Riseborough, and Linus Roache and is produced by Daniel Noah, Josh C. Waller, Elijah Wood, Nate Bolotin, and Adrian Politowski.

Mandy premieres at the Sundance Film Festival January 19th.

Set in 1893, Cage plays Red Miller, a broken and haunted man, who hunts the unhinged religious sect who slaughtered the love of his life.
