Peter Jackson Revving His Mortal Engines

Now that Peter Jackson has put his Lovely Bones on display, the question beckons -- What's next for the visionary director? A return to true horror perhaps? Not just yet. It appears that Jackson is a bit more interested in hungry cities for the time being.

According to The Dominion Post Peter Jackson is secretly working to adapt the Mortal Engines fantasy novels for the screen. A spokesman for Jackson did not deny the project was on the books yesterday but said, "Any comment should come from Peter". Jackson, who is understood to have had the rights to the books for some time, was unavailable for comment.

The books, by Philip Reeve, are set in a post-apocalyptic world where cities have become giant vehicles and must consume each other to survive. Mortal Engines is the first book in the series and has won a Nestle Smarties Book Prize and was shortlisted for the 2002 Whitbread Award.

Keep it here for more as it comes.

The Incarnations of Immortality would be pretty cool fantasy books to see adapted by PJ. I wouldn't want him to get sucked into making 5 movies but since they're all stand alone at least On A Pale Horse would rock. Used to be a big Piers Anthony fan back in the day.

In terms of epic fantasy series' he's also got TEMERAIRE on his plate as well.

I'd like to see him do that. A huge movie about dragons being used as weapons during the Napoleonic war.

When we were in San Diego for SDCC, We asked Jackson if he had any interest in the Steam Punk phenomenon and style. He said it definitely interests him. This seems like that sort of project, unless I'm mistaken.
