Werewolf: The Series DVD Plans Scrapped

In what is probably the worst news I've heard in a while, "Werewolf: The TV Series" will NOT be coming to DVD due to legal battles over some of the music used within the series. Yep. This sucks.

The webmaster of werewolftv.com just sent out the following to the members of the Werewolf Yahoo group:

"A manager has responsibilities that can cover tasks they like and don't like. For example, writing people up and/or firing them is part of their duty to perform and most people do not like that aspect of their role. As webmaster and forum moderator, I too share this burden of responsibility to do things I do not like.

It is with great sadness that I must deliver the devastating news that the Werewolf TV Series will NOT be released to DVD. The Shout Factory has had to abandon the project and give the series back to Sony.

The Shout Factory had to cancel the release because of two artists (which will remain unnamed) that would not play ball. Sony does not have the individual audio tracks, so they were unable to replace the songs, as the audio was mixed together. The two songs were featured over dialogue scenes that could not be cut. The Shout Factory's only option, even after spending a lot of time and money on it, was to cancel it and give the title back to Sony. If Sony had the audio tracks, it would have been easy to replace the two songs.

The Shout Factory and Sony are not at fault. This has happened due to the greediness of the music industry.

So, twenty two years after the Werewolf series hit the airwaves, the fan made copies of the original run and reruns will be the only testament of this great series along with the web site I have put together."

Thanks to DC reader Amatsu Mikaboshi for the heads-up. I guess all that's left to do is look one last time at the cover art for a project that sadly will never be. Let the venting begin.

I hope someone leaks the names of the two "artists" who wouldn't cooperate so the fans can hound them for their douchebaggery the rest of their days.

I read that the so called artists were Huey Lewis and Mike and the Mechanics.

This is the worst DVD news ever!!! I have been waiting patiently for ages to get hold of this series, and now when they're right on the verge of releasing it, this happens. These has-been pop stars should be named and shamed and we an all send them HATE MAIL!!! ASSHOLES. Obviously don't mind making no money through bootlegging, which will go on forever now. Pathetic idiots.

I wondering complaining will do anything other than vent some hostility, but here we go...

I love this one...from werewolf news

Yeah, Werewolves aren’t popular…neither are vampires…not at all. That whole Twilight thing is a flash in the pan. Noone really is interested in such things…

I hear there is a movie called the Wolfman going to be out in 2010…surely, that wouldn’t draw a crowd either. I certainly wasn’t one of those people who waited in front of the tv to watch Werewolf every week…nor do I still have a press kit from it to this day…
I just know it wouldn’t do a thing to help boost sales of the music groups that are holding out. They are right to be such purists. Who wants to make a buck off of fans or from iTunes selling their oldie but goodies.

Bitterly sarcastic,

A Disgruntled Fan

Is anyone keeping up with this site as well?
A couple of lovely bitchings there.

Well, on the bright side, I guess this saves me a few bucks.

But being the dumbass that I am. I have a question on this subject. Didn't Sony already pay for the music, and thus the rights use it when this show was made twenty-two years ago ? I'd think this would be a moot point to begin with. Please enlighten me.

Ok. So the musicians walked because they wanted more money than was offered.

To the assclowns that killed this project: HELLO! The longer this series stays in Bootleg Hell the longer you guys get NOTHING in royalties! At least if it's released and out there you get royalties from the people who PAY for the DVD set, vs. nothing for those who pirate it off their buddies. Really smart, you two. You might want to direct the driver of your short bus to take you to an economics class as it might prove useful. :/ And I hate to break the news to you, but you're known for your brilliant TV scores despite doing recent not-so-great musicals about Marie Antoinette and God knows who else. ALW you ain't, and somehow 'Let them eat cake, French Revolutionaries,' doesn't quite have the same ring as 'Don't Cry for Me, Argentina.'

Seriously. Right now all those musicians have done is really pissed off fans of the show and *ensured* they're not going to earn anything off the DVD set. Something is always better than nothing, and spite is not attractive.

My $3.

It's like a guilty little pleasure, like bad 80's music, Rocky Horror...not to mention, it take ya back. Ya know?

I think you may agree it was better than "Facts of Life"...

Just sayin...

I worked on this DVD actually, shot two interviews for it. I'm very sad to hear that it won't be seeing itself to stores. The two interviews I shot for it happen to also be two of my most favorite gigs as a camera man. Really interesting stuff. Wish they could be seen. :(

Damn. It's sad when a DVD release is scrapped because of people wanting more cash in their pockets. I was looking forward to seeing this show again after so long.

Thanks a lot you two unnamed douchebags.

The douche bags are Mike and the Mechanics and Huey Lewis!
