On January 10th Universal Studios Home Entertainment is releasing The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption on DVD and Blu-Ray. It’s a direct follow-up to Chuck Russell’s 2002 flick starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the titular character who rises up to fight the evil warlord Memnon in order to save his people from oppression, and we recently chatted with charismatic actor Victor Webster, who plays the new King.
The original The Scorpion King, a spin-off from the successful The Mummy 2 (wherein we originally met the character as a digital monster), served as a prequel, after which we got a rather bland sequel in 2008 as a DTV release that featured a former Power Ranger as the fearless warrior once portrayed by Johnson. It was a total misfire, but it looks like Universal finally got it right for its third installment, Battle for Redemption, which picks up soon after the original story (dismissing Part 2 entirely) with Webster stepping into the franchise alongside proven director Roel Reiné (who did a fantastic job helming another solid DTV release in 2010- Death Race 2) as well as a gaggle of veteran actors (Ron Perlman, Billy Zane) and relative newcomers (Bostin Christopher, Selina Lo, Krystal Vee, Dave Bautista and Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson) alike.
Recently Dread Central was invited out for the press day for Universal’s Scorpion King 3, where we were able to sit down with several of the film’s stars, including Webster, who discussed stepping into some very big shoes in order to play the film’s titular character, the rigors of Reiné’s “no downtime” rule on set and holding his own against brawlers like Bautista and Ferguson.
Check out our exclusive video interview with Webster below, and make sure to keep it tuned here for the rest of the week for Dread’s coverage of the Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption.
