Well … no one saw this one coming! A record-shattering movie opening begetting a sequel?!? That’s right, kids. A fourth film in the Paranormal Activity franchise will most likely be in theatres next October to continue the saga of one really screwed up family.

The Wrap caught up with Don Harris, Paramount’s head of domestic distribution, this morning, who dropped the following on fans …

I can’t imagine that we wouldn’t make a number four, and I imagine (Paramount Film Group president) Adam Goodman this morning is thinking about the challenge. I’m sure he’s thinking, ‘Now what do I do?’

Indeed. The next chapter is probably going to be the trickiest one to make. I mean, you can’t go back any farther. You can maybe revisit the girls’ teenage years, but for us the smart money is on wrapping it up and going forward with the story in the next film. Where is Katie? Where is Hunter? We’re thinking next October all will be revealed.

You're such an inspiration for the ways that I will never, ever choose to be.

Ah, sequelitis… Such a nasty little virus. This franchise is turning into Paramount’s 21st-Century Friday the 13th. Fuck, while they’re at, might as well throw Jason in there too! At this point, would it really matter?

Forget Paranormal Activity 4. What I want is a Final Destination vs. Paranormal Activity crossover movie. A family being terrorized by a the demon narrowly survive a fatal accident after a member of the family has a premonition. Now death is out to kill them but the demon wants to keep them alive for its own agenda. Death is constantly setting elaborate death traps that the demon keeps undoing while the family is completely unaware anything that unusual is going on or how close they continually come to dying. Grand finale has the family trying to escape their own home as two unseen supernatural forces just fling shit at each for fifteen straight minutes.

I’ll only buy into that if the true star of part 2, the pool cleaning bot, makes an appearance and kills both supernatural forces at the end.

If I had to venture a guess as to a plot for part 4, it would be some asshole with a handheld camera trying to document the disappearences of Katie and Hunter. Of course he finds them at the end and dies, probably at the hands of an evil possessed Hunter.

Let’s recap: Micah films shit, he dies. Daniel films shit, he dies. Dennis films shit, he dies. (soon to be announced) films shit, he/she dies. We’re not talking rocket science here.

Paranormal Activity should have ended with the original cut of the film.

Number 3 was really not a good film… What the hell was all that CGI crap, and who was editing these tapes to show us the highlights we got? So much that made the first movie great was missing here… I hope number 4 gets back to the basics that made the first one so good – play with people’s minds more. We don’t need to see everything, and less of the CGI effects. Keep it real people!!!
