Vampire Dog Wants to Sink His Adorable Fangs into Your Neck

It wasn’t until I watched Mr. Plinkett’s hilarious review of Cop Dog that it truly hit me how many low budget direct-to-DVD kiddy doggy flicks there have been. It doesn’t look anyone’s going to drive a stake through this subgenre’s heart anytime soon, and that’s a good thing because a Vampire Dog is coming to sink his adorable fangs into your neck.

Seriously, watch that Mr. Plinkett review where he runs down a seemingly endless list of DVD dog movies. It just goes on forever. Adding a bit of a ghoulish twist isn’t out the question either given this year alone has spawned Spooky Buddies, Monster Mutt, and The Dog that Saved Halloween. Now Canadian Tax Shelter Theater, in association with Trilight Entertainment and Joker Films, proudly presents Vampire Dog.

Ace is just like any other new kid at school, until his grandfather from Transylvania dies at age 96 and sends him his dog Fang. Ace soon discovers that Fang is a vampire dog – and he speaks English! Mad scientist Dr. Warhol and her bumbling assistant Frank try to capture Fang and steal his DNA in hopes of developing the latest anti-aging technology, but lucky for Ace the vampire dog manages to stay one step ahead of his pursuers. Along the way an enduring friendship forms when Ace and Fang discover that together they are unstoppable.

I take issue with the first sentence of that synopsis. Ace is not like any other kid at school. Have any of you ever actually known anyone named Ace? Not as a nickname; someone whose legal first name is Ace? I know I haven’t.

Geoff Anderson makes his directorial debut, and it should come as no surprise he was the right man for the job since IMDB lists him as the video effects supervisor on no less than six other direct-to-DVD dog flicks. If it was a kiddie dog flick with the word “buddies” in the title, then chances are he worked on the special effects in some capacity.

Newcomer Collin MacKenchie and Amy Matysio (Dolan’s Cadillac) star in this undead doggy kiddy comedy from first-time writer Tracy McMenemy.

I wonder how they plan to get around the whole blood-drinking aspect of Fang’s vampirism. Will they pull a Bunnicula and make it a vegetarian, or will they begin finding a series of bloodless cat carcasses all around the neighborhood?
