Finally after months of talks Warner Brothers has given the long talked about live action adaptation of Akira the go ahead. Even better? Cooler heads have prevailed, and the hunt is still on for an actor to take the role. Sorry, Keanu.

According to Variety WB has scheduled Akira for a late February/early March, 2012 start.

In July Warner tapped Spanish helmer Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown) to direct at a budget of $90 million, which was brought down from an initial figure of well over $100 million. Where the budget stands now isn’t clear, and Warner Bros. had no comment on the project.

With a green light in place, the studio can begin shopping for the two male leads; sources tell Variety that Tron: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund is considered a front-runner. Both Warner and Collett-Sera have been keen on the actor but had to wait for a green light to make their move.
