Okay, kids, here ya go! Your very first look at the DVD and Blu-ray artwork for Wes Craven’s Scream 4. Nothing too surprising, but then again neither was the film itself. Dig it!

Still no word on what kind of supplemental materials to expect. Look for Scream 4 on Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD on October 4th, 2011, hopefully with some of this restored scenes of mayhem added back into the mix. Stay tuned.

“Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with Sheriff Dewey (David Arquette) and Gale (Courteney Cox), who are now married, as well as her cousin Jill (Emma Roberts) and her Aunt Kate (Mary McDonnell). Unfortunately Sidney’s appearance also brings about the return of Ghostface, putting Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, along with Jill, her friends, and the whole town of Woodsboro in danger.”

I enjoyed “Scream 4”. It may not have been the most surprising movie, but I thought it was very entertaining, with Craven showing real flair behind the camera. I’ll be picking up the DVD.

One thing I’m tired of is this incessant need to point out (ie the Facebook comment above) that because the box office returns for a movie weren’t as substantial as expected, the film therefore must be inferior.

Let me put this in perpsective. The brilliant “Super 8” -which is hands down my front runner for the best film of 2011 – has in twenty five days of release grossed a worldwide total of $155 million.

“Transformers: Dark of the Moon”, on the other hand, has already earned $399 millon wordlwide, despite doing nothing more for film than confirming beyond any lingering doubt that attention deficit disorder is indeed a marketable film making “style”.

Box office performance doesn’t translate into quality, no matter what end of the spectrum the film lands on. Maybe “Scream 4” didn’t reinvent the wheel at all or match the financial success of the others, but it was still a lot of fun, with energized performances, sharp writing and a director who was clearly enjoying himself, resulting in a film that was much better than I expected a late-in-the-game fourth entry to be.
