Christian Bale Front-Runner for Lead in The Dark Tower

Though he’s met with some HEAVY competition for the role, it looks as if The Dark Knight is the new front-runner for The Dark Tower. A good choice if you ask us.

According to The New York Post sources say Christian Bale has pulled ahead of Javier Bardem and Viggo Mortensen as Ron Howard and Stephen King’s choice for The Dark Tower‘s main character, gunslinger Roland Deschain.

The Post previously reported that Howard’s adaptation of King’s books has set off a casting frenzy with agents battling to land their clients roles in what promises to be a blockbuster franchise. A source said “Dexter” star Jennifer Carpenter is rising on the short list for the role of Susannah, as is French/Moroccan Ghita Tazi.

Look for more as it breaks.

  1. Bale would make a decent Roland, although I stand by Viggo for the role. Just as long as there is no Batman voice anywhere.

Carpenter could pull off the schizo nature of Susannah in her Detta/Odetta phase, although the changing the character from black to white bugs me a little (unless they put her in blackface)

And I haven’t heard much about the casting of Eddie. Just throwing this out there…AJ Bowen?

  2. I’ve read the books several times (particularly The Drawing of the Three, which is not only my favorite of the series but one of my favorite King books, period) . Viggo Mortenson would be the best choice. I like Bale well enough, but I just don’t see this.
Ron Howard has enough excellent material in his repertoire to get me excited about his handling of the film. In addition to the movies listed above, I’ll also point out Cocoon, which was both charming and thought provoking.

  3. I have to read these books someday.

  4. It’s a Howard movie, it will suck ass. We’re talking about a director who’s best movie was Splash a few decades ago.

    • I’d rate Parenthood, Apollo 13, Frost/Nixon, and the Grinch all well above Splash. Howard probably still has a few good movies left in him — mostly it’ll depend on the script and cast he has to work with.

      • The Grinch is awful. It’s a spit in the face of Dr. Seuss fans. No way does it rate above Splash. The other movies you have a point with.

        • *wipes spit from face*

As someone who grew up on Seuss, I thought it was great and Carrey was perfect in the part. And I’m obviously not alone since it’s sitting at 57% (among audience members) on Rotten Tomatoes.

But, hey, at least we agree on Triangle and 127 Hours though! :)

          • I don’t think Grinch was awful but I much prefer the animated version. No one has done Seuss justice yet.

Apollo 13 was so boring I entered a coma in the theater and it took serious amounts of sugar to wake me up.

          • As someone who grew up on seuss I found it annoying they turned the Grinch from a horrible ogre in to a green pedophile.

          • And a 57 percent among audience members does little to convince me of the film’s quality, sorry. The film hasn’t received a certified fresh.

  5. Really??? I’m a big Christian Bale fan, but I just can’t see him as Roland.

But I said the same thing when I heard Heath Ledger had been cast as the Joker, and was pleasantly proven wrong.

I’m VERY interested to see who finally gets casted for all the major parts!!
