Mimic and Cronos Special Editions Update. No, Really.

Remember that cruel April Fool’s Day joke from last April? You know, the one about a director’s cut of Mimic coming to DVD? Bingo. I’ll never forget the confusion shown by Andrew Kasch when it seemed to be a prank, as he said he watched as people worked on it. Relax Andrew … your sanity is saved. It’s coming all right, along with Cronos, courtesy of Criterion.

Guillermo del Toro himself stopped by the Del Toro Films message board to deliver this update for anxious fans:

“CRONOS is evolving nicely. We are including a NEVER-SEEN-BEFORE version of GEOMETRIA (1987) the short that I made for 1 thousand bucks and that I was never able to finish the way I wanted it. NOW I re-finsihed it for this disc (dont worry, no CGI or fancy stuff) and I like it- I never did before- but now I do.

CRONOS has never looked so beautiful and we found dozens of photographs of the making of the device, etc

MIMIC is looking fabulous. Some of the negative had been lost but we found alternatives and are finishing the Director’s Cut. VERY HAPPY!!”

Check out the aforementioned short Geometria below, and start doing your happy dance!

AHA! I TOLD you! Nobody believed me… Vindication! HAHAHA!

I always believed Mimic was being worked on because del Toro was giving us updates on its progress. The Mimic director’s cut was cancelled by Miramax because of budget cuts, so it appears they let del Toro take it over to Criterion. Great news!

Criterion eh? Mimic? Cronos I can see. I like Mimic and love Guillermo but just thought it seemed so choppy. I’ve always felt the kid had to be involved in the story more at one point because he starts out as the central character and then just disappears. Are these coming out on Blu-ray?

Maybe the kid should have asked “Are you a giant”?

It will be interesting to see how close to his screenplay he can make that MIMIC director’s cut. I have no clue what he was allowed to shoot of his intended third act and what was changed by the Weinsteins at the script stage. I’m very curious and I hope I’ll finally get a version of the film I can feel good about having on my shelf.
