Stephenie Meyer’s The Host Heading to the Big Screen

Stephenie Meyer's The Host Set for AdaptationTwilight series author Stephenie Meyer is about to see another one of her projects up on the big screen, and luckily for us, this one’s geared toward adults. Rights to Meyer’s The Host have been acquired by producers Nick Wechsler and Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz (who also teamed up for John Hillcoat’s adaptation of The Road).

Variety reports that Meyer’s novel is a love story set in the near future on Earth, which has been assimilated by an alien species of benevolent parasites that call themselves “Souls.” One such soul, the Wanderer, is fused with a dying human named Melanie Stryder, in an attempt to locate the last pocket of surviving humans on Earth.

Andrew Niccol will write the script and direct. [He] first came under consideration after Wechsler and the Schwartzes asked Meyer what her favorite science fiction films are. Gattaca and The Truman Show were in her top five; Niccol wrote and directed Gattaca and scripted the Peter Weir-directed The Truman Show.

Interestingly, a story from MTV today about the upcoming film hearkens back to April 2008, when Meyer told MTV News what her dream cast for The Host would be: “With The Host, I think the actors could be really big names,” she said. “That would be cool. I’d love to see Robert Redford put on a beard and be Jeb; he would be amazing. … Matt Damon has some very Jared-esque qualities, and then [I’d love to see] Casey Affleck as Ian and Ben Affleck as Kyle. Imagine the interplay.

Considering that Wechsler told Variety, “We wanted Stephenie to be involved in the adaptation and have her endorse and be part of the creative decisions,” we just may see her dream become a reality! Keep it here for more on The Host as it comes.

You're such an inspiration for the ways that I will never, ever choose to be.

  • BoggyCreekBeast

My wife read all those vampire books, but couldn’t make it 30 pages into The Host. Whew! At least that one won’t make it to my HT!

  • Morgan Elektra

Now I have to re-read The Host and see if I can picture those actors in those roles. I remember Jeb though and Redford WOULD be good… but when ISN’T he?

  • Floydian Trip

I thought Redford was either dead or retired. I can’t remember the last movie I’ve seen him in. I’d rather just go on disliking this woman and anything she does without ever reading or seeing anything based on her writing for myself.

Gattaca and The Truman Show in the top five science fiction films? Ben Affleck? That’s all wrong.

    • The Woman In Black

I loved Gattaca — and Niccol’s Lord of War is one of the last Cage films I thought was any good — but having not read The Host, I can’t really comment on the casting choices. Although it would be cool to see Redford doing something in our genre.
