Spend an Unhappy Hour with Gris Grimly at The Poe Museum

We hear a lot from horror fans that “everything happens in LA or New York; how about something for those of us in-between?” Well, it’s not quite the Midwest or the Mountain States, but folks in and around Richmond, Virginia, have one helluva cool event to look forward to!
Join artist Gris Grimly at The Poe Museum on Thursday, September 24th, 2009, from 6pm to 9pm, for an evening of entertainment. The event ties in with the 200th anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe, and Grimly will be signing his NEW book Edgar Allan Poe’s Tales of Death and Dementia. There will also be a display of original artwork from the book, light refreshments, a cash bar in the Enchanted Garden, musical entertainment and a free screening of Grimly’s short film “Cannibal Flesh Riot” (review here), followed by a screening of Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow at 9pm for $5.00.
Tales of Death and Dementia is a companion to Grimly’s Edgar Allan Poe’s Tales of Mystery and Madness, with more than 100,000 copies of the US editions sold plus editions in four different languages. Grimly has done it again, with spine-chilling visuals, inviting the reader to open the book … if you dare.
This event takes place at The Poe Museum, 1914 E. Main in Richmond, VA, home to the world’s finest collection of Edgar Allan Poe’s manuscripts, letters, first editions, memorabilia, and personal belongings. The Poe Museum provides a retreat into early 19th Century Richmond where Poe lived and worked.
Limited edition silk-screened posters (limited to 50) and the new line of Gris Grimly’s Poe t-shirts will be available for purchase as well as a gallery display of prints and original art for sale. Four new scented oils based on the four stories in the book from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab will also be available. When you purchase the book, one t-shirt or print, and one oil, you will get a limited Poe scent. Items are on a first-come/first-served basis.
In addition, the September edition of Grimly’s monthly “nooseletter” landed in our mailbox recently and provided an update on his latest short film, “Wounded Embark of the Lovesick Mind”: I’m still working with Sammy in the editing room cutting together the film. The unfortunate part about no budget films is the long haul involved. I should be seeing a rough cut of the film soon. Huy has been working on the stop-motion puppets up in Portland. Once they are completed, the stop-motion will follow. Lunar Effects are working on some rigs for a few final pick up shots we need to get.
Here is the synopsis: Lovesick is infatuated with the one girl he believes to be his soul mate although Beauty, an independent playgirl, thinks otherwise. Lovesick’s delusional emotions and idiosyncrasies push Beauty out of her safety zone, causing the relationship to unravel. But when Lovesick is unable to cope with the loss and falls into a downward spiral, he turns to murdering his obsession in order to keep her. Inspired by the writings of Edgar Allan Poe, “Wounded Embark of the Lovesick Mind” taps into a fear that we all have: the fear of slipping off the wire into the abyss of insanity.
