2009 Grimm Up North Festival Details Emerge

Grimm Up North Horror Festival in Manchester, EnglandManchester, England’s “Grimm Up North” has set its goals high. As the first horror festival of its kind in the northwest portion of the country, it will showcase the very best in horror films, video gaming, and merchandise and promises its attendees that “nothing before has been as big, as bold, and as bloody!

Held October 30th to November 1st, 2009, at the state-of-the-art entertainment complex known as The Printworks, “Grimm Up North” will include:

  • Over thirty feature and short films screened at the Odeon Printworks
  • Red carpet movie premieres with special guest appearances
  • A preview of the gaming industry’s hottest unreleased titles on the big screen and in a unique gaming environment
  • A separate horror fair with unique merchandise and an exhibition of cool props and prosthetics from the movies
  • Entertainment such as a Halloween horror hunt with big prizes up for grabs, a zombie ball, and more

    The fest’s opening film will be a gala premiere of The Descent 2 prior to its release in December. Other blood-curdling screenings not to be missed include the UK premiere of Manchester produced shocker Splintered, starring renowned Liverpool actor Stephen Martin Walters. Also showing are Johnny Kevorkian’s The Disappeared, an urban mystery horror starring Tom Felton (known for his performances as Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films), and Autumn, a new zombie movie based on David Moody’s renowned book of the same name, starring Dexter Fletcher.

    Also on the slate are two full-on frighteners from Down Under: supernatural stalk and slash The Ferryman and the British premiere of writer/director Kate Glover’s Australian Outback take on the teen party massacre movie, Schooner of Blood.

    US premieres include The Graves (with Tony Todd), which won’t be officially released in the UK until January, 2010. There will also be a special screening of Glenn McQuaid’s comic horror I Sell the Dead to celebrate its UK DVD release.

    Heading up the Foreign Frights section are the UK premiere of Juraj Jakubisco’s Bathory, which stars Anna Friel and takes an unflinching look at the life and legends of Elizabeth Bathory, basis for Hammer’s infamous Countess Dracula, and the bizarre Japanese gore fest Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl.

    In addition, ZOMBIE AID 2 kicks off on Sunday with what is expected to be a record-breaking “Walk of the Dead” through the streets of Manchester. To celebrate the attempt, they’ll be screening George A. Romero’s classic Dawn of the Dead just prior to its UK Blu-ray release and Marc Price’s micro budget shocker Colin, helping to launch its UK cinema release.
