Fox Wants Ridley Scott for Alien Prequel

Fox Wants Ridley Scott for Alien PrequelWait, Fox wants to make a good Alien movie now? It certainly would seem so if today’s announcement is any indication.

Last week, it was reported that Fox is looking into chronicling the trials and tribulations of the Space Jockey with their upcoming Alien prequel. Commercial director Carl Erik Rinsch was said to be in talks to direct and things seemed to be moving forward nicely …

But today, The Playlist nabbed word that Fox still wants another Alien, but only with Ridley Scott at the helm. Sources at Fox tell EW the studio is not “interested in green lighting the project unless Scott directs himself.”

It seems like a good move on the part of Fox. Not only will it take a filmmaker with some vision and integrity to get the series back on track, but it will help to have a director who isn’t easily bullied by the studio. With Ridley at the helm, it seems like this is our best chance to get another solid Alien movie into theaters.

I don’t see this happening. Even if he does sign on to do it, it’ll just be added to the pile of other projects he has on the go and he has the freedom to do what movies he wants when he wants. Added to the fact that he’s 71, who knows if he’ll even be around long enough to see this made.

Rothman can and will still fuck this up. Besides, Scott hasn’t said anything on the matter yet, now has he?

But, we can hope, can’t we?

  • rupp30

I understand why everyone would be psyched bout having Ridley back at the directors helm for an Alien prequal but I’m still just not sure if this is a good idea yet. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

  • Floydian Trip

A prequel with Ridley Scott at the helm? Fuck yes.

  • Avid Fan

I would be psyched for Ridley to do a genre film again period. Be it a prequel, than I say YAY. I’m having a hard time believing that a studio like fox is actually trying to have some integrity.
When I think prequel, I think of the image of the huge H.R. Geiger alien on a what looks like a giant gun, and I think, ohhhhhhh the possibilities, that would be amazing to see what happened to the inhabitants of the planet they land on in the first film, no?

    • thedarkestshadow

I don’t believe that planet was the home of the “space jockey” species. That ship crashed there, more than likely because of the xenos on board.

  • Masked Slasher

A prequel doesn’t interest me much, either.

The whole prospect of prequels is pretty tiring.

  • Gus Bjork

Did a horror movie fan become a mole at Fox? It sounds like no lose proposition. What would be really neat is if they tried a William Gibson script as well.

  • Sirand

Check out the big brain on Fox!
Are they finally showing some common sense with their franchises?

    • Rottenjesus

I’d rather see an ALIEN 5 rather than a prequel.

      • Sirand

I’d rather see an Alien prequel than more AVP movies or a remake.

        • Messiahman

I’d rather see none of the above. Prequels by their very nature have no stakes and thus no interest. I have no desire to have the Space Jockey explained – his origins are much, much cooler in my own head. Nor do I have a desire to see young Ripley, the building of the Nostromo, the formation of The Company or any other such nonsense. Fuck exposition of things we’ve already seen. Move the story forward or don’t move it at all.

And it’s not like Scott even has the chops anymore. He’s 71, and his last few efforts have been flaccid (and let’s be honest, his greatest work is looooong behind him).

Here’s an idea – how about letting the ALIEN franchise lie and create something NEW?
