An Epic Christopher Nolan Thriller Was Originally Meant to be a Horror Movie

Christopher Nolan has a very dark aesthetic for a filmmaker who has not technically made a scary movie. While his psychological thrillers like Momento and Insomnia are definitely under the genre umbrella, none of his work has actually landed in the horror category. However, according to Syfy, one of his most popular titles was originally going to check that box on his resume.
It seems that the star-studded sci-fi heist film Inception was almost a horror movie. Nolan stated:
“I was thinking along the lines of a horror movie at first, but it eventually became this project,” he said. “I was looking for a device whereby the dreams would become important to the story, and the thought that someone could invade your dream space and steal an idea is immensely compelling to me. The concept that dreams feel real while we’re in them underlies the whole film.” – The Telegraph via Syfy
This revelation comes on the heels of Nolan telling Variety that he would ‘love to make a horror film”. So, while we are still reeling from that, we now have to suffer knowing there was almost a scary version of his complicated thriller. Allow me to give you a refresher on Inception so you can see why it could have been the perfect vehicle for Nolan’s horror debut.

In the film,
“Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a thief with the rare ability to enter people’s dreams and steal their secrets from their subconscious. His skill has made him a hot commodity in the world of corporate espionage but has also cost him everything he loves. Cobb gets a chance at redemption when he is offered a seemingly impossible task: Plant an idea in someone’s mind. If he succeeds, it will be the perfect crime, but a dangerous enemy anticipates Cobb’s every move.”
Inception was written and directed by Christopher Nolan. It had an all-star cast that included Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Elliot Page, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, and Tom Berenger.
The 2010 thriller is currently streaming on Peacock alongside many other films helmed by Christopher Nolan.
