Neve Campbell High Rise Disaster Thriller Climbs the Prime Video Charts

Prime Video Neve Campbell

Disaster movies might not be horror movies in the strictest sense, though there’s little denying they target the same overarching, existential fear. When disaster strikes, it’s not all that unlike a masked maniac. In those moments, survival is out of your hands, and despite your best efforts, it sometimes isn’t enough. In recent years, we’ve seen a shift away from explosive, towering disaster epics in favor of more grounded, grittier offerings.

Roar Uthaug’s The Wave and sequel The Quake (John Andreas Andersen) imbued the subgenre with some international appeal. 2012’s The Tower, hailing from South Korea, was a striking, terrifying remake of The Towering Inferno. In the United States, our disaster movies still mostly feature The Rock, but what’s wrong with that? Case in point, 2018’s Skyscraper which is presently charting on Prime Video.

Per Prime Video: Dwayne Johnson attempts a death-defying rescue when his family becomes trapped within a burning skyscraper.

It’s basically The Tower, which was basically The Towering Inferno, but with a few (many) more outlandish action sequences. Does it make sense? No. Would you survive similar circumstances? No. But, does it have Neve Campbell of Scream fame fighting bad guys while performing death-defying stunts? Yes, it does.

I’m a simple man, and while the days of the movie star in the conventional sense might be over, I’m still more than willing to check something out if it’s got a performer or two I like. Put Neve Campbell in a movie, I’m watching it. Plus, for all the balderdash innate in Skyscraper’s presence, it’s still fun to watch a giant building collapse while survivors swing on cranes and dive into inexplicable pools of water from several stories up.

What do you think? Do you plan on catching Skyscraper on Prime Video? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins, and while you’re there, let me know what your favorite disaster movies are!
