Well, well, well. Justice at last. Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army has finally experienced the resurgence in popularity that it’s always deserved since it recently landed on the streaming platform (HBO) Max. Once considered an underrated, if not semi-disregarded, gem in del Toro’s filmography, the mind-blowing sequel seems to have now captured the hearts of a much wider audience in the USA, and we couldn’t be happier about it.
Released all the way back in 2008, Hellboy II: The Golden Army follows the title character and antihero, played by Ron Perlman, as he battles unknowable creatures and all sorts of dark forces that threaten humanity. Casual stuff. With del Toro’s signature blend of outrageous visuals, intricate world-building, and compelling storytelling, the film received critical acclaim upon its release … but it ultimately failed to achieve the same level of commercial success as other superhero blockbusters of its time.
