This Day in Horror History: HOUSE OF 1000 Corpses Was Released in 2003

Shock-rocker-turned-filmmaker Rob Zombie’s directorial debut was unleashed upon the masses on this day back in 2003. House of 1000 Corpses introduced us to Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig) and the extended Firefly family (comprised most prominently of Baby played by Sheri Moon Zombie and Otis Driftwood played by Bill Moseley). Haig’s Spaulding became one of the first bonafide horror icons of the 21st Century.
House of 1000 Corpses spawned two sequels: The Devil’s Rejects (released in 2005) and 3 From Hell (released in 2019). If you never experienced the film that started it all (or if it’s been a while) check out the trailer and synopsis for House of 1000 Corpses below.
Synopsis:
Two young couples traveling across the backwoods of Texas searching for urban legends of murder end up as prisoners of a bizarre and sadistic backwater family of serial killers.
Trivia:
There is more than one instance where you see a poster for two missing young boys. Those boys were actually pictures of Rob Zombie and his brother Spider One (the lead singer of Powerman 5000) as children. (Source)
In the DVD commentary, Rob Zombie revealed that Jake McKinnon (The Professor) couldn’t see very well in his costume. In the scene where he swings a real axe at Denise (Erin Daniels), his vision was so bad he could have seriously injured her if she didn’t move fast enough. Rob says in his commentary, “We just assumed she would get out of the way.” (Source)
