I Am Alone (2015)
Starring Gareth David Lloyd, Gunner Wright, Katy Bodenhamer
Directed by Robert A. Palmer
Taking a battered sub-genre of horror and at least tweaking it somewhat to make it fairly presentable is indeed a noble task; yet, when you look at the overall product, was there ever really a change to what you’d just viewed?
I Am Alone, the latest zombie found-footage presentation from director Robert A. Palmer, takes the audience WAY out of the congested, overrun city streets and drops us in the middle of the wilderness where we witness a TV host (Lloyd) who’s been infected with a virus, and we’re all left to watch him turn and suffer slowly. The idea of Jones’ character getting lost in the woods with his Go-Pro outfitted crew was a nice touch, and him being unaware of the complete manic situation happening out in the real world gives a sheltered look at how one cannot only be lost topographically, but in the dark when it comes to the happenings of the active world. The viewer is then subjected to a collection of fireside confessionals, shaky-cam footage, and the inevitable zombie metamorphosis.
I’d love to prattle on about how different this production looks and feels, and for all intents and purposes, it does work… to an extent. This certainly isn’t anything mindblowingly different in fashion, and there are more than a few downsides to the overall show, but with a solid performance by Lloyd, some notable zombie instances, and a sub-plot that involves a VERY close inspection of the host’s circumstances by our old pals at the CDC, the movie was mildly fun to partake in. Worth a one-timer if you’re up for Bear Grylls meets Night of the Living Dead.
