Hulu Now Has the Scariest Ghost Story Since ‘Insidious’: “A good old-fashioned scary movie”

Insidious is one of my favorite horror movies of the century. Even if it wasn’t, there’s no denying that James Wan’s haunted house indie has considerably influenced the state of the genre since the first entry was released in 2011. Whether it’s the style of jump scares, the pacing of the supernatural, or the outright look of paranormal antagonists, the haunted house post-Wan has just been trying to catch up since we first met the Lamberts.

Movies like Imaginary, Lights Out, the extended and expanded Conjuring Cinematic Universe all owe a debt to Insidious, and even other franchises, including Paranormal Activity and Ouija, eventually borrowed the best of what made Insidious work. It’s a shame, then, that subsequent entries in the series have largely lost the spark.
The most recent entry, Insidious: The Red Door, wasn’t terrible, but it was still nowhere near as inventive as the first. But wouldn’t you know it? This year, a chart-topping indie horror movie on Hulu is the best Insidious movie since the first, even if it’s not technically an Insidious movie. Watch it and you’ll see what I mean. It’s a hoot, and you can learn more about It Feeds below:
Per Hulu: After a young girl bursts into their home psychiatry practice claiming an entity is feeding on her, Jordan and her clairvoyant mother must find a way to stop the force before the girl is taken completely.
Chad Archibald’s It Feeds was one of the biggest surprises of this year’s Panic Fest. I largely went in blind, drawn by my familiarity with Archibald’s earlier work (I kinda liked The Drownsman) and the presence of Ashley Greene. It wasn’t that I didn’t expect much, more that I wasn’t quite sure what I’d gotten into. Luckily, It Feeds blew me away. This was as confident and engaging a supernatural tale as I’d seen in a while. While It Feeds doesn’t quite reinvent the rules, it certainly elevates them with great scares and truly stunning set design.

In our review out of this year’s Panic Fest, we wrote, “Overall, It Feeds is a good old-fashioned scary movie that reinvigorates supernatural horror without rewriting the script. It’s familiar but modern, stylish, and well-curated, a fascinating world with an eerie vibe that leaks into every frame. I wouldn’t mind a few more stories following the Winstones.” With It Feeds now available to stream on Hulu, make sure you don’t miss out on what’s definitely going to rank among the most underrated horror releases of the year.

What do you think? If you saw It Feeds, did you catch the Insidious inspiration? If you haven’t yet seen it, let me know when you do over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
