This Movie is so Disturbing, it Was Nearly Never Released. Now You Can Stream it Here.

There are few things quite as exciting as stumbling across a movie title you’d never heard of before. In today’s information age, even if I haven’t seen something myself, there’s a powerful chance I’ve at least heard of it. It’s why none of my peers will play movie trivia with me – I know too much. And, yeah, that space would be better reserved for more important things. Still, it’s nice knowing everything there is to know about Renny Harlin’s The Covenant, even if it’s not particularly useful knowledge.

I do try to make an effort to regularly seek out titles I’ve never seen before. There’s thrill in discovery, and more thrill when an unassuming movie just absolutely knocks your socks off. Such was the case with this hidden, controversial gem I encountered on Twitter. As the story goes, this movie was so disturbing, it almost wasn’t released. Learn more about Andrzej Żuławski Polish epic On the Silver Globe below:
Per IMDB: A team of astronauts land on an inhabitable planet and form a society. Many years later, a single astronaut is sent to the planet and becomes a messiah.
The release controversy is indeed real. Filming started in 1976, but the project was shut down by Polish authorities, particularly Janusz Wilhelmi, vice minister of cultural affairs, who demanded that all materials be destroyed. Resultantly, Żuławski was only able to complete the project a decade later, and On the Silver Globe premiered at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival. Żuławski has remarked that the finished project isn’t what he intended. However, audiences were nonetheless enraptured, and On the Silver Globe remains one of the most surreal and disturbing movies ever made.
