This is the Most Disturbing Series Streaming on Netflix

Adolescence

There’s no denying Netflix has radically transformed the way we watch and discuss our favorite shows. Think about Stranger Things or even Wednesday—the long gaps between seasons would have been unheard of in the early aughts primetime scene. Some platforms like Max still release weekly episodes, though Netflix has largely conditioned audiences to have every episode available at once. Good for binging, bad for watercooler conversations the following day. Some shows need to simmer.

It’s the nature of the beast, and likely always will be now, though it does have the unfortunate side effect of burying some of the best shows out there. Stranger Things is an anomaly, though audiences largely watch the popular thing and then forget about it as soon as the next, shiny show comes along. Case in point? Netflix’s Adolescence captivated the world when it released earlier this year. The conversation isn’t quite as fervent, but the success is—Adolescence is the second most-watched Netflix show globally… ever.

Per Netflix: When a 13-year-old is accused of the murder of a classmate, his family, therapist, and the detective in charge are all left asking: what really happened?

Adolescence is heavy stuff. It’s also a filmmaking achievement, with each episode filmed in the style of one, continuous take. The show captivated and terrified viewers when it first premiered, and come awards season, hopefully, we’ll see Adolescence back in the conversation.

After all, the critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reads, “Stylistically bold and beautifully acted from top to bottom, Adolescence is a masterclass in televisual storytelling and a searing viewing experience that scars.”

Yeah, it’s a masterclass. Short, too, clocking in at just four episodes. It’s the perfect weekend binge.

It’s one of the most unnerving and engaging thrillers released on Netflix ever, and it’s certainly the kind of buzzworthy title that sufficiently makes the case for the subscription fee. In the streaming era, platforms need hooks, and Adolescence is as sharp a hook as I’ve ever seen. This one deserves to remain relevant in the zeitgeist and not fall as yet another streaming tragedy. What do you think? Any plans to watch what’s probably the best series on Netflix? It has beaten out Stranger Things, after all, on the most-watched list, and it didn’t do that for nothing. Let me know any thoughts you have over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
