A “coldly, mutedly terrifying” Maika Monroe Horror Thriller Is Now on Netflix!
There’s something undeniably appealing about genre icon Maika Monroe. Perhaps it’s because, unlike so many others who got their start in horror, she continues to return to genre fare time and again. She sees merit in the subject matter and understands that horror films afford performers the chance to demonstrate a level of versatility they may not otherwise have the chance to. Seeing as Monroe is essentially a cinematic chameleon, each new role she tackles shows viewers a different side of her talent. Speaking of Monroe, we are pleased to report that one of her more recent efforts, Watcher, is now available for Netflix subscribers to stream.
If you haven’t yet experienced this one, you’re in for a treat. And if you’ve already seen the flick, perhaps now is an opportune time for a repeat visit. After all, the flick is suspenseful and atmospheric and it features a strong turn from Monroe as the lead character.
Dread Central staff writer Chad Collins reviewed the film out of Sundance in 2022 and awarded the picture 4/5 stars. His coverage reads, in part, “…I can say with confidence that it is one of Sundance’s scariest premieres. Watcher is coldly, mutedly terrifying. Expertly crafted and chillingly conceived, it’s bound to scare the hell out of its audience.”
I concur with my colleague. He’s hit the nail on the head. This is a chilling effort that is best experienced alone with all the lights out. If you’re ready to endure the flick, navigate to Netflix where Watcher is presently available to stream.
In case you’re not overly familiar with the particulars, Chloe Okuno wrote and directed Watcher. Okuno adapted the screenplay from a script by Zack Ford. In addition to Monroe in the lead role, Karl Glusman and Burn Gorman also feature as core characters.
The setup for this cat-and-mouse thriller goes as follows: As a serial killer stalks the city, a young actress who just moved to town with her boyfriend notices a mysterious stranger watching her from across the street.
Well, there you have it. Watcher is a top-notch horror thriller featuring the ever-versatile Monroe as the lead character and it’s now available to stream on Netflix.
