Stephen King Says This Terrifying HBO Series Deserved a Second Season … and He’s Right
Pet Sematary is my favorite Stephen King novel, but Holly Gibney is my favorite Stephen King character. The savant/detective, featured regularly in his more contemporary fiction, is remarkably textured, and it’s a joy that she finally got her first solo outing in 2023’s Holly. On the small screen, she’s been played by Oscar-nominee Cynthia Erivo in Max’s short-lived The Outsider.
And The Outsider, full stop, is one of the best shows Max has done this century. It was terrifying, provocative, deeply felt, and impeccably cast. It’s a shame the series never got a second season. Recently, Stephen King, author of the source material itself, shared a similar sentiment.
Per Max: A gruesome murder leads a local detective into a disturbing search for the truth in this series based on Stephen King’s novel.
Responding to a user sharing how The Outsider deserved a second season, Stephen King said, “Yes. It did.” Short, sweet, and to the point. And, he’s right. While the ten episodes we have are beefy enough, nicely telling a complete story, the finale ends with a conventional horror twist—maybe the horror isn’t dead—and plenty of questions about the origins of the titular entity remain. Most importantly, Erivo’s Holly Gibney doesn’t make an appearance until midway through the show, and I especially demand more Holly!
It is also not the first time Stephen King has shared his thoughts on the show. Previewing the final three episodes of the show’s run, King shared they were poised to blow viewers away.
Before the show premiered, King shared that the show “blew [his] mind.”
So, don’t just take it from me. Take it from the master of horror himself. The Outsider is excellent. While we won’t be getting another season, it remains an indelible slice of televised horror. Don’t miss it.
