‘The Crow’ Reboot: Streamy First Images Of Bill Skarsgård Arrive

We have all been waiting for a glimpse of the upcoming film The Crow for what seems like an eternity. Whether you are a fan of the original and curious about a modern adaptation, or happen to be obsessed with the filmography Bill Skarsgård is building, the recent announcement of the June release date has the internet excited. We are happy to report these first-look photos shared via Variety do not disappoint.

This modern retelling of the story is directed by Rupert Sanders. The screenplay was penned by Zach Baylin and Will Schneider. Bill Skarsgård will share the screen with FKA Twigs and Danny Huston. The story has a complicated legacy, and our friends at Variety caught up with director Rupert Sanders to discuss that while sharing some exclusive images from the movie.

The official synopsis reads:

“Soulmates Eric Draven (Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA Twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.”

This version will differ from the original source material, and the first film. While discussing that Rupert Sanders explained that is also sort of a tribute to the late Brandon Lee’s legacy. He stated:

“Obviously, it was a terrible tragedy, and it’s definitely something that we’ve always had in mind through the making of the film,” he says. “Brandon was an original voice, and I think he will always be synonymous with The Crow, and I hope he’s proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve brought the story back again. His soul is very much alive in this film. There’s a real fragility and beauty to his version of the Crow, and I think Bill feels like he is a successor to that.” -via Variety

The Crow was originally a comic created by James O’Barr. O’Barr wrote it to help him cope with losing his fiancée, who was killed by a drunk driver. The manuscript sat around for years before getting published and eventually being adapted for the big screen in 1994.

The previous film was directed by Alex Proyas. The screenplay was written by David J. Schow and John Shirley. The movie starred Brandon Lee in what would devastatingly become his final role. You can watch the original on Paramount+, Prime Video, and MGM+.

I saw the original when I was too young to appreciate it. However, I have not been able to make myself rewatch it. I find it too sad and get stuck on how young Brandon Lee was when this avoidable tragedy struck. So, I am hoping this new version becomes my version of the story. I am also happy Bill Skarsgård got the role. We are understandably still in awe of his version of Pennywise in the It remakes. However, it is time for that to stop being the default role that comes to mind for an actor with such a chaotic resume

The Crow is set to land in theaters on June 7, 2024.
