Quentin Tarantino’s 2022 book, Cinema Speculation, is the gift that keeps on giving. I have showcased several recommendations from the tome here previously. And I am back with another cinematic suggestion today. Hooray!

This latest rec is a crime thriller called The Outfit. John Flynn (Brainscan) is at the helm of this gritty effort, which sees legendary actor Robert Duvall setting out on a revenge spree to avenge the death of his brother.

In the pages of Cinema Speculation, Tarantino says the following of The Outfit: “It’s still cool and exciting. And the scene between Duvall and [Joe Don] Baker on the stairs is the epitome of poignant masculinity. With the picture’s final freeze-frame capper displaying a self-mocking tone that ends the whole film on a hearty macho guffaw.”

If you’re interested in taking in The Outfit, you’re in luck. You can catch the 1973 crime thriller streaming for free (with ads) on Tubi, as of the publication of this post.

The setup is as follows: When petty crook Earl Macklin (Duvall) is released from prison to find that his brother was murdered over a botched bank heist, he has one thing on his mind — revenge. After tracing his brother’s death back to a merciless, well-armed ring of mobsters, Macklin teams up with his old partner Cody (Baker) in an effort to track down the thugs. However, the tables turn when Macklin realizes that the deadly criminals he is after have already put out a hit on him.

That’s all we’ve got for you at the moment. But stay tuned to the site for more cinematic recommendations from the masters as we uncover them. And be sure to follow us on Twitter so you never miss an important update.
